Seasons

There are six seasons in Bangladesh. Each seasons lasts for two months. They are summer, the rainy season, the autumn, the late autumn, the winter and the spring.

Summer

Summer is the first season of the year. It comprises two Bengali month 'Baishakh and 'Jaistha'. It is season of terrible heat. In the season, rivers, ponds, lakes and canals dry up. Sometimes the whole day passes without any breeze and sometimes monsoon attends with hail storms. But it is not without blessing. Various kinds of fruits like mangoes, jack fruits, guavas, pineapples and lichies are found in this season.

Rainy season

The months of  'Ashar' and 'Sraban' constitute the Rainy season. In this seasons, the sky is full of clouds. So, sometimes it drizzles and sometimes it rains heavily all day long. Then it becomes difficult to go out for work. Boats become the main means of communication in many areas. Yet it is enjoyable too. Children play in the rain. We get time to play indoor games when it rains cats and dogs.

The sun becomes very hot. This excessive heat makes vapour which is carried away by the wind. It rises higher and higher in the sky and then becomes cloud. Afterwards it causes rain fall.

In this season, there are clouds and rains. The sky is covered with clouds. It rains cats and dogs day and night. We cannot see the sun. There are roaring of thunder and lightning in the sky. The rivers, canals, tanks and ponds are full to the brim. The farmers plough lands and harvest Aus paddy and jute.

It carries alluvium for our land and makes our land fertile. Paddy and Jute grow in plenty. In this season the air is cool and the water is pure. Its gives us drinking water and the earth is wet. The filth and dirt are washed away. The flowers look beautiful and crops grow well. The rivers and pools are full of fishes. The dusty roads and streets are clean.

The roads and streets are become muddy. We cannot move about without boat. The poor cannot work and so they suffer. The cattle also suffer. Storms and winds blow and people die of cholera. Sometimes heavy rainfall causes flood. The standing crops are damaged. Sometimes it takes away toll of lives and washes away cattle and houses.

Our cultivation largely depends on the rainy season. Had there been no rains this would have been a barren country. But Bangladesh is a land of plenty and wealth. The poets are also fond of it.

Autumn

The Bengali months 'Bhadra' and 'Aswin' constitute the season of Autumn. In this season, the whole landscape seems to be smiling with green crops. Lotus, Shapla and many other flowers bloom in the ponds, lakes and rivers in this time

Late Autumn

The Bengali months of  'Kartik' and 'Agrahayan' compose the season of Late Autumn. It is between the end of rains and the beginning of Winter. During the season, the fields begin to take a golden hue for it's ripened crops. Fish is abundantly available in this season.

Winter

After the Late Autumn, comes Winter with it's big fog, mist and cold. This is the season of harvests. During this season, days are shorter and nights are longer. Sabbager, cauliflower and other vegetables are found in abundance.

The Bengali months 'Poush' and 'Magh' comprise this season. Though 'Poush' and 'Magh' comprise the winter season, actually it lasts longer than those two months. Generally, its begins in the middle of the November and lasts till middle of the February.`

In winter cold wind blows from the north. People puts on coarse or woolen clothes keep the body warm. Winter brings mist and dew. Dew drops fall on leaves. they glitter like pearls in the rays of the morning sun.

Winter is the season of pessimism and negation. It is the season of fog, mist and chill. by the touch of the icy hands of winter the leaves and seeds of the trees die out. Nature gives a deserted look. Trees look like skeletons bereaved of their leaves.

The nights are longer than the days in winter. Mists hang like a thick veil and make the sun invisible. Though the night is over, darkness still reigns all around. Sometimes it is bitter cold. But it is a terrible season for the poor because they can not afford money to buy warm clothes. Many people in the villages make fire to warm themselves.

Winter is not altogether bad for us. It is the season of vegetables. Varieties of vegetables are available in this season.Various kinds of cakes are made in this season.
